Mother's Day Cake Preview

Aston Villa Football Cake

I meant to post this cake BEFORE showing my new cutters but an early start fried my brain yesterday so... here's the Aston Villa cake for a 40th birthday.  The recipient is an Aston Villa fan (obviously!) and the cake was commissioned by his wife for his surprise birthday party.  The design was based on a cake I made for my mother-in-laws partner Derek when he turned 70 but I modified the scarf positioning and went with claret and blue lettering.  The football on the top was made using the sphere cake tin as mentioned in the post earlier this week.

My new alphabet cutters

Well, they are not actually new know how it is, you're browsing around the cake stuff looking to buy the essential items you need for a specific pick up a cake tin, some paste, maybe a cake board you're also buy three cookie cutters, a texture mat and some more alphabet cutters!  They then sit in your cake cupboard until you're looking for a scraper that's worked its way to the bottom of the box and voila - new FMM cutters!  It was actually excellent timing that I found them as the font was perfect for my Aston Villa cake:

They were really easy to use and I love the font, definitely on the top of the box now!

How do I make a sphere cake? (football cake, globe cake, you name it!)

Last week I needed to make a football cake so out came my trusty sphere cake tin.  I think sphere cakes are definitely the hardest to make...

The tin.  Impressive eh?  Looks a little like a spaceship...."to infinity and cake heaven!"  Anyway, I digress.....:
Lightly butter the tin, especially around the rim:
Cut out some small rectangles of greaseproof paper:
And place around the top of the tin to stop the mixture falling out (this photo insisted on displaying the round way round so please move your head 90 degrees to the left to view correctly!):
Fill with cake mixture as high as you dare!
Place the top half of the tin lightly on the bottom half and remove the greaseproof paper.  Then ensure the top is SECURELY inserted, if not the mix may leak out.  Bake the cake for 20 minutes then remove the tin from the oven and invert the ball, return the cake to the oven for the remaining cooking time.
Remember I said to make sure the lid is secured??  I'd inverted the tin and when I later checked the oven the mixture flowing out of the crack in the tin...oops!  This is how the cake turned out - with the middle missing!

Not to worry as my second attempt was a success!

Wedding Favours

Car surgery?

Today I took my little car for some minor cosmetic surgery ...equivalent to a face peel perhaps or one of those 'filler' procedure?! 
This is him before we left looking nervous (only to be expected)

And a couple of hours later we went to pick him up and.....

How fabulous he looks!  The company Spencer Signs did a great job and were extremely helpful and put up with my indecision and procrastination.

I must confess that driving him back I was extra careful.  Firstly, because I wanted everyone to look at the sides of the car as I paused at roundabouts and secondly, if I cut someone up they'd know where to find me!!  Ha ha!


We decided not to have anything on the bonnet (well, it is the size of a sheet of A4) but this is the view from the back:

He's like a new car....

Doctor Cake

I had an enquiry this week ...regarding the birthday cake for a doctor which reminded me of a cake I made a while ago.  The doctor in question was celebrating his 30th birthday with all of his friends and wanted a cake to reflect his current doctor self and former party self!

Cake Boards

A simple but dramatic way to cover cake boards ...using wrapping paper!

Take some nice wrapping paper (thicker paper is better)
Cut enough paper to fit around the cake board
Cut the edges into small strips
Then glue around the edges piece by piece
Until the whole board is covered and looking neat
Da-Dah! Perfect for a birthday cake (make sure you put the cake on it's own thin cake board before decorating and placing on the larger board)

Square boards are even easier!  Just wrap them as if you're packing a present:
